Why are you a vegan? and other rhyming stories for English language learners

The long awaited book of rhyming stories for English language learners is finally here!  Over the years we have had  several requests for a simplification of the vocabulary in some of our rhyming stories for little ones so that they are suitable for people learning English as a foreign language.  This has finally been achieved thanks to Madeleine Lifsey, an English language teacher, who worked with Violet to re-word the stories so that they are all written in present tense, simple vocabulary.  The result is this lovely little book 😀

The five popular rhyming stories, Why are you a vegan?, “I’m not dinner!”, Edmund’s Lunch, bones and teeth and Where are you going Deidra?, adapted for English language learners, can be enjoyed here for free but if you want to use them in the classroom, this fully illustrated paperback is just the thing 😀

Sherman and Geynes: Pretend Detectives

Fancy a giggle?  Then you’ll love this!  Sherman and Geynes: Pretend Detectives is a whole load of eccentric nonsense about two boys who investigate imagined incidents.  The fact that the incidents – missing persons, lost property, secret rocket launch – are made up doesn’t prevent the boys from interviewing witnesses and following a trail.  And one way or another, the trail always leads to cake.

The minds of Miranda Lemon’s quirky characters are so open to possibilities that there is no limit to the conclusions they draw from the evidence they find, and as unlikely as those conclusions sound, who’s to say they’re wrong?  Look at the person sitting across from you on the bus – where do you think they’re going?  To a secret meeting?  To plan a daring diamond heist?  You never can tell 😉

This comic book contains the first four episodes which you can read for free at Violet’s Vegan Comics is you so wish.  I recommend you do – they unwind your mind 😀

The Princess Who Liked To Be Popular

The Princess Who Liked To Be Popular has a new cover and a new font and some new information pages at the back about how to change the world, that make this colourful, glittery fairy tale even better!

For those who don’t know, let me remind you –

Princess Primrose loves to be loved so she always does her best to please everyone. Her father, the king, is worried that her need for popularity will get her into trouble but when he tries to explain that to her she disregards his advice. Consequently, when she is left in charge of the kingdom while her parents are away, she has to learn the hard way that it’s not always a good idea to give the people what they want.

The Princess Who Liked To Be Popular (which you can read for free at Violet’s Vegan Comics on the Fairy Tales page) is a colourfully illustrated fairy tale with the vegan message of causing no harm, of respecting nature, and of doing the right thing regardless of how unpopular it may make us; an old fashioned story with modern relevance. For reading to or with young children, or for children aged 8 and up to read alone.

Author/Illustrator: Violet Plum (Violet’s Vegan Comics)

Genre: Juvenile Fiction/fairy tales

Recommended for reading to young children and for children aged 8 and up to read alone.

Learning Letters and Rhyming Words

Learning Letters and Rhyming Words by Eric and Jo Rain is a cute and simplistic alphabet rhyme to make learning fun.  Each page has a child-like style crayon drawing of an animal or plant beginning with (or containing) a letter of the alphabet and a verse underneath which rhymes with the verse on the facing page.  I’m not explaining this very well, but here’s a few scans to give you an idea of what I mean:

The opened book didn’t fit on the scanner (plus I scanned them in ‘illustration mode’ so the grey stripe down the middle is just shadow) but I think you can get the idea with these 🙂

It’s a really fun way to introduce young children to the alphabet and how words look and sound, and they’ve chosen a font which draws the letter ‘a’ as children would write it, sans serif.  And it inspires delight in the plants and animals it describes.

Plus at the end of the book is an alphabet learning game to cut out and play:

A lovely fun way to learn the alphabet 🙂

Where are you going Deidra?

children's ebook

Deidra, a dairy cow, keeps disappearing and won’t tell anyone where she’s going.  Her friends are very curious but she’s not giving anything away and, since she’s always back by milking time, the farmer’s not worried.  In this colourfully illustrated short storty for little ones (ages 2 and up) you can find out what Deidra’s up to and why she needs to be so secretive about it.

Where are you going Deidra?, which is inspired by real life events,  has been around for a while  and the rhyming version of it is included the paperback “Why are you a vegan?” and other wacky verse for kids.  But now it has been digitally remastered (well, it’s got a new font 😉 ) and is available in mobi format (ie suitable for kindle) from The Vegan Bookstore at the very reasonable price of $0.99 USD

A lovely picture book with a happy ending to keep on your device 😀

Grandpa Wollemi’s Birthday

vegan children's book

Grandpa Wollemi’s Birthday

Another big and beautiful book by Edward Benn, Grandpa Wollemi’s Birthday doesn’t disappoint.  Beautifully illustrated in naïve style by Cynthia Barnett, this adorable story is about a child wanting to make something for Grandpa’s birthday.

Everyone is excited because it’s Grandpa Wollemi’s birthday.  Kauri has made him a present and Myrtle has made him a present, but Cedro just can’t think what to give him.  That is, until he remembers that Grandpa has a sweet tooth and decides to make him a birthday cake, all by himself. The simple egg-free recipe and how-to is described in the story so that readers will know how to make one themselves (with adult supervision of course 🙂 ).

Absolutely delicious! Why not try before you buy?

You can read the story here for free 😀
