Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar

We love Louis Sachar (whose name rhymes with cracker – in case you were wondering) and after reading Fuzzy Mud I decided that it qualified as a vegan book for children 🙂 It doesn’t use the v-word but the main protagonist seems to be a plant-eater (there is no mention of any animal protein in her diet) and the grippingly entertaining story is wrapped around a vitally  important environmental message.  I wouldn’t be at all surprised to discover that Louis Sachar was veg*n but I have no idea whether he actually is.  Anyway, this book qualifies so I wanted to share it with you 🙂

The story is about Tamaya who has a scholarship to a posh school and walks there every day with Marshall who is a year older than her (they’re pre-teens I think). They never go through the woods because there are creepy rumours about a strange guy who lives there.  And they’ve been told not to.  Meanwhile, on the other side of the woods a laboratory is developing a new “green” fuel, made of artificially engineered living micro-organisms, aka ‘fuzzy mud’.  Well,  one day, after being challenged to a fight by the school bully, Marshall decides, for his own safety, to go home via the woods.  Tamaya doesn’t want to go that way but she’s not supposed to walk home alone so she follows him.  And that’s when it gets really scary!

I’m not going to tell you anymore (and don’t spoil it for yourself by reading the Amazon blurb because it gives too much away) because you should get the book and enjoy the whole thing from the beginning 🙂

Grandpa Wollemi’s Birthday

vegan children's book

Grandpa Wollemi’s Birthday

Another big and beautiful book by Edward Benn, Grandpa Wollemi’s Birthday doesn’t disappoint.  Beautifully illustrated in naïve style by Cynthia Barnett, this adorable story is about a child wanting to make something for Grandpa’s birthday.

Everyone is excited because it’s Grandpa Wollemi’s birthday.  Kauri has made him a present and Myrtle has made him a present, but Cedro just can’t think what to give him.  That is, until he remembers that Grandpa has a sweet tooth and decides to make him a birthday cake, all by himself. The simple egg-free recipe and how-to is described in the story so that readers will know how to make one themselves (with adult supervision of course 🙂 ).

Absolutely delicious! Why not try before you buy?

You can read the story here for free 😀

Reflecto Girl and other stories

vegan comic book

Reflecto Girl and other stories

This is the big one! It’s like a big, hefty paper version of the Violet’s Vegan e-Comics website! (well, a lot of it anyway).

Four episodes of ‘Reflecto Girl‘, four episodes of ‘Megan & Flos‘, four episodes of ‘Venus Aqueous‘, three episodes of ‘The English Family Anderson‘, two episodes of ‘Sherman and Geynes‘ and two episodes of ‘Luke Walker: animal stick up for-er‘ (the comicbook version) are packed into this bumper comicbook.

In addition, in true 1970s comicbook style, there are puzzles, recipes and colourful ads for yummy vegan things.  This book is big, beautiful and not cheap – but come on, it’s over 400 pages of vegan fun! 😀

At £32 it’s not something anyone’s going to buy on a whim, – after all, you can read it all for free at Violet’s Vegan e-comics, – but it’s got a lot in it and if you were planning to go off-grid, you might want it 😉  Anyway, there it is 🙂

Reflecto Girl’s Lost Notebook

vegan notebook

Reflecto Girl’s Lost Notebook

Reflecto Girl, on the way to meet her future sidekick and tell him her whole story, left her notebook on the bus. She was very worried because in it she had written all about her life that year and how she’d become Reflecto Girl and things she’d done with the Dounto.  She was very concerned that this information, which was supposed to be kept secret, would fall into the wrong hands. Her friend made her feel better by telling her that as long as her real name and address were not in the book – which they weren’t, she’d made sure of that – losing it wouldn’t do any harm.

Keeping her real identity secret was the most important thing so of course she couldn’t claim the notebook from the bus depot lost property.  And that means that it’s out there, waiting for someone else to find it.

So, if you would love to learn about the girl behind Reflecto Girl; if you would to love know what her life was like before the Dounto, and where her Grandma went; if you would like to try out a couple of recipes that she made a note of; and if you love to keep a diary and would like to fill in the rest of Reflecto Girl’s book with your own notes and doodles (it’s half empty) then why don’t you pick it up?  It’s right here 😀

Megan & Flos Book 1

Megan & Flos Book 1

(Volume 3 of the Brave Girls series)

Megan is a quiet girl who loves to read.  She also loves science fiction and her bedroom walls are covered in posters of her favourite shows.  Flos is a fruit explorer from the planet Summum who wears a disguise so as not to be noticed by the locals.  However, she is compelled to talk to Megan on the bus because she needs her help.

They quickly become firm friends, so devoted they would lay down their lives for each other. Hopefully it won’t come to that.  Megan and Flos are strong, principled females who won’t be fobbed off and will get pro-active when no-one else seems to be doing anything. They’re kind, they’re smart, they’re determined to save the planet and, oh yeah, they’re telepathic.  The first four episodes of Megan & Flos – the popular comic from Violet’s Vegan Comics – is now here in paperback.  Recommended for readers aged 8 and up.
