Why are you a vegan? and other rhyming stories for English language learners

The long awaited book of rhyming stories for English language learners is finally here!  Over the years we have had  several requests for a simplification of the vocabulary in some of our rhyming stories for little ones so that they are suitable for people learning English as a foreign language.  This has finally been achieved thanks to Madeleine Lifsey, an English language teacher, who worked with Violet to re-word the stories so that they are all written in present tense, simple vocabulary.  The result is this lovely little book 😀

The five popular rhyming stories, Why are you a vegan?, “I’m not dinner!”, Edmund’s Lunch, bones and teeth and Where are you going Deidra?, adapted for English language learners, can be enjoyed here for free but if you want to use them in the classroom, this fully illustrated paperback is just the thing 😀

Sherman and Geynes: Pretend Detectives

Fancy a giggle?  Then you’ll love this!  Sherman and Geynes: Pretend Detectives is a whole load of eccentric nonsense about two boys who investigate imagined incidents.  The fact that the incidents – missing persons, lost property, secret rocket launch – are made up doesn’t prevent the boys from interviewing witnesses and following a trail.  And one way or another, the trail always leads to cake.

The minds of Miranda Lemon’s quirky characters are so open to possibilities that there is no limit to the conclusions they draw from the evidence they find, and as unlikely as those conclusions sound, who’s to say they’re wrong?  Look at the person sitting across from you on the bus – where do you think they’re going?  To a secret meeting?  To plan a daring diamond heist?  You never can tell 😉

This comic book contains the first four episodes which you can read for free at Violet’s Vegan Comics is you so wish.  I recommend you do – they unwind your mind 😀

Reflecto Girl: Beginnings

First Megan & Flos, now Reflecto Girl – all the brave girls stories are being turned into proper comics!  Here is Reflecto Girl: Beginnings – the first four episodes.  If you’re not familiar with Reflecto Girl, let me fill you in.

Renée Gale is an ordinary girl who becomes extraordinary with the help of an inheritance from her grandmother.  She becomes the latest possessor of the Dounto (pronounced doon-toe), a mystical mirror that has been passed down through the female line of her family since ancient Celtic times.  When the Dounto is held in front of someone doing something horrible to somebody else, the horrible thing they’re doing happens to them.

Armed with the Dounto, Renée is Reflecto Girl and she uses it to protect and defend animals 😀

Of course you can read all the stories for free at Violet’s Vegan Comics if you want to, but if you prefer to turn paper pages, this is the comic book for you! 😉

Megan & Flos: Beginnings

Megan & Flos is now a proper comic from the beginning!  It’s been a while.  Megan actually met Flos in 2012 but then they were only pencil drawings 😉 Now, with the help of Artistry by Stephen Toub, and Comic Life by Plasq, they have been reborn as a proper full colour comic book!

This book contains the first five episodes!  Megan and Flos meet; Megan saves Flos, Flos saves Megan; Megan and Flos track down the polluters; Megan and Flos try to stop the frackers; Megan and Flos go up against the volpars on another planet.  It’s all go!

Of course you can read it all for free at Violet’s Vegan Comics, but if you’re the kind of person who likes to actually turn pages, then this is for you! 😀

Reflecto Girl episodes 5 & 6: Sidekick & Harsh But Fair

Renée Gale became Reflecto Girl when she inherited the Dounto (pronounced doon-toe) from her grandmother.  The Dounto, an ancient Celtic mystical mirror, reflects people’s misdeeds back onto them.  With it Renée defends and protects animals by showing people just what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the kind of treatment they’re dishing out.

In episode 5 Reflecto Girl finds herself in a formal garden and what starts out as a lovely day turns ugly when she discovers the lengths some people will go to for a neatly manicured lawn.  She also learns something she didn’t know about the Dounto and gets herself a sidekick.

In episode 6, Renée, with her new sidekick, goes up against a government man who makes the common mistake of underestimating her and suffers some heart-breaking consequences.

This big, colourful comic book includes not only these exciting stories but also some fascinating information about moles, and calcium, and there’s a couple of fun puzzle pages.

The Reflecto Girl series was first published at Violet’s Vegan Comics and if you like your comics virtual, you can pop over there right now and read all the Reflecto Girl stories for free.  However, if you like to hold the book in your hands, and do the puzzles with a pencil, you can get this one from Amazon for the very reasonable price of £4 😀

The Dragons of Durga

The Dragons of Durga is an epic novel by Simone Spearman.

It’s a slow, gentle tale, beautifully told with detailed, poetic descriptions that transport you to a magical, imaginary world.  The story takes place in an ancient time. Long before anyone can remember, long before history was recorded, back when magnificent dragons still walked the Earth.

Spearman describes the different species as tribes – the Human tribe, the Dragon tribe, the Feline tribe, – all of whom live in co-operation and harmony.  The Dragons have a special relationship with Human children whom they teach and mentor, but this only lasts until they come of age.  Humans of age only get to commune with Dragons at the Midsummer celebration, to which every tribe of Durga is invited.  The picture is wonderfully idyllic until the unthinkable happens and a vision of the future reveals a world without dragons.

A myriad of characters – Dragons of all shapes and sizes, a winged Cat, an unpredictable Rat, a Human girl who can change into any animal, a Human boy who blames the Dragons for a past tragedy – embark on an epic adventure, all working together to ensure the survival of the Dragon tribe.

And it’s a big hunk of a book – 538 pages!!!  It took me a good few weeks to finish it because unfortunately I only have time to read at the end of the day, just before I go to sleep, but it certainly made me look forward to bedtime.  I loved this book.  It’s wonderful to have quality literature in which the protagonists are plant-eaters who fight for peace, harmony and equality among species.  I love the dragons, I love the children, I love the weird and wonderful names they had and the innovative use of capital letters.  Thank you Simone L Spearman.

Change The World With Rose And Chili

Here’s a cute little children’s book by Malte Hartwieg 🙂

Change The World With Rose And Chili has been written for little children who don’t know the truth about where their food comes from, and it explains in simple terms that animals are not here for our use, they are here for their own reasons.

With adorable illustrations, Malte Hartwieg takes Rose and her best friend Chili on a journey to an imaginary world where, one by one, Rose meets individuals who are suffering because humans use them for food or clothing: a fox who has no coat, a sheep who has been robbed of her wool, a chicken bereft of eggs and a cow with no milk for her calf.  At every meeting Rose is moved to help these individuals by giving them her warm clothes or finding plant-based foods to replace the animal-based ones, and the imaginary world becomes a brighter, greener, happier place.

By the end, when Rose and Chili return home, Rose has learned how easy it is to change the real world: simply eat plants instead of animals.

This book needs to be on the shelves of nurseries and pre-schools everywhere so that little ones can learn, before they get brainwashed into accepting the status quo, how simple it is to change the world.

Just lovely 😀
